Does Overtime Count in Sports Bets? Totals, Spreads, Props

In American football, basketball and hockey, overtime usually counts toward full-game spreads, totals and moneylines. In soccer it does not: bets settle on 90 minutes plus stoppage time, and extra time is excluded unless the market says otherwise. Quarter, half and period markets, and some hockey totals, have their own rules, so the market name matters more than the sport.

Key points

  • Full-game bets on US team sports generally include overtime; quarter, period and some half markets generally do not.
  • Soccer bets settle on regulation time, which includes stoppage time but not extra time or penalties.
  • Hockey is the least consistent: at some books full-game totals include overtime and shootout; at others the default is 60 minutes with a separate "OT included" market.
  • Player props usually count overtime stats; shootout stats often do not.
  • Labels like "regulation," "60 minutes" or "including overtime" override the sport default. Read them.

The default by sport

The table below sums up what three published rule sets say: Caesars Sportsbook's Nevada house rules, Encore Boston Harbor's Massachusetts house rules (approved March 2025), and Fanatics Sportsbook's Ohio house rules. It is a map, not a promise for your book.

Football: overtime in, quarters out

Caesars' Nevada rules say overtime counts in all markets unless stated otherwise, and give the fourth quarter as an exception. Fanatics says all football bets include overtime unless otherwise stated, and lists exceptions: quarter and half markets exclude it, apart from the full match and 2nd half markets, which include it. Highest scoring half and quarter are settled at the end of regulation.

Spreads and totals are therefore live through overtime: if a game is tied 24-24 after 60 minutes and ends 27-24, the final score used for grading is 27-24, and the 3 overtime points count toward the total. Only a game that is still tied after all periods is a tie for grading, and Encore Boston Harbor's rules refund a straight wager in that case.

Basketball

Caesars' basketball rules state overtime counts for all wagers unless stated otherwise. Encore Boston Harbor's rules settle on the final score including overtime but list regular-time-only markets (match result in the three-way sense, half-time/full-time, highest scoring half and quarter, 2nd half total points) and, separately, "including overtime" versions of the second-half total and spread. Fanatics says whole-game and 2nd-half bets include overtime, and that fourth-quarter markets and fourth-quarter or second-half player props do not.

The same market name can therefore mean different things at two books. A "2nd half total" is a good example: one book includes overtime by default and another gives you a choice.

Heads-up. When a book offers both "2nd Half Total" and "2nd Half Total (Including Overtime)," the plain one is the regulation-only version at books that structure the markets this way, as Encore Boston Harbor does. The label carries the rule.

Hockey: where books disagree

Caesars' Nevada rules say that for all wagers overtime and shootouts count unless stated otherwise, for North American events, and a shootout winner is credited with one goal for settlement and totals. Fanatics gives the same default for totals and puck lines, but its 3rd period spread excludes both. Encore Boston Harbor's rules go the other way: total goals over/under and team totals are listed as regular time (60 minutes only), with a separate "OT included" total and puck line, and moneyline includes overtime and shootout. The practical result is that a 3-3 game that ends 4-3 in overtime could be an over 6.5 winner at one book and a loser at another if the market is not labeled. Always read the market description, not the sport name.

Player props are more uniform. Fanatics counts overtime stats and excludes shootout stats unless stated; Encore Boston Harbor says player specials include regular time and overtime, shootout not included.

Soccer: 90 minutes plus stoppage time

Caesars' Nevada rules say matches must go at least 90 minutes, that normal time includes any injury or stoppage time added by the official, and that extra time and penalty shootouts do not count unless stated. Fanatics says all soccer markets settle on regulation time, which includes stoppage time but not extra time or penalty shootouts. If extra time does not take place on a market that depends on it, bets are void.

This matters in knockout competitions. A cup tie that is 1-1 after 90 minutes and finishes 2-1 after extra time is a draw for the match result, and goals scored in extra time do not count for the totals, unless the market is specifically an "advance," "to qualify" or "including extra time" market.

Props, first and last scorers

  • Player props: the player usually must play for the bet to have action (Caesars football and hockey rules; Encore Boston Harbor's football and soccer rules). Statistics from overtime generally count; shootout stats do not.
  • First goal scorer, soccer: Encore Boston Harbor's rules say own goals do not count, and if the first goal is an own goal the bet settles on the scorer of the second goal. For last goal scorer, an own goal at the end moves the bet to the goal before it.
  • Quarter, half and period props: usually exclude overtime; Fanatics says 3rd period and 4th quarter player props do not include it.
  • Anything labeled "first," "last," "next" or "will lead": check whether it is limited to regular time. Encore Boston Harbor's soccer "will lead during the match" market, for example, counts regular time only.

Check before you bet

  1. Read the full market name on the slip, including text in parentheses.
  2. Open the market's rules or the "i" icon; the overtime note is usually there.
  3. Check the sport-specific section of the house rules for the book, not only the summary.
  4. For a parlay, apply the same check to every leg; parlays and teasers are graded leg by leg.
  5. At a Las Vegas counter, ask the writer to confirm and look at the posted rules. The Las Vegas sportsbook overview lists the main books.

FAQ

Does overtime count for NFL spreads and totals?

Yes at the published rule sets reviewed: overtime is included unless a market states otherwise, with quarter and half exceptions.

Do shootout goals count in hockey totals?

At Caesars and Fanatics, a shootout winner is credited with one goal for settlement, so it can affect a total. Player props do not count shootout stats. Encore Boston Harbor uses an "OT included" market for this.

Does soccer stoppage time count?

Yes. Stoppage or injury time added by the referee at the end of normal time is part of the 90 minutes. Extra time is not.

What if the market does not say anything about overtime?

Fall back to the book's sport rules. If you still cannot tell, ask the book before betting, because the answer decides whether a bet wins.

Why do two books settle the same game differently?

Because each book writes its own house rules, and hockey totals and second-half markets in particular are handled differently. See also odds and payout rates for how the lines are priced.
